Vodafone customers have been told to "say goodbye" as a major feature is being axed this month.

Earlier this week the communications provider sent an email to users that said: "We've been busy investing in our network, and by retiring the 3G network we'll be able to continue strengthening our newer 4G and 5G network, ensuring you get the best possible connection."

The alert also told customers: "Here at Vodafone, we'll be saying goodbye to 3G across the UK from January 2024.

"From January 2024 we're switching off our 3G network across the UK. Don't worry you don't need to do anything as your phone will continue to connect to our fastest network connection available."

The move comes as all UK phone providers have committed to closing down their 3G networks. 3G is being phased out to make room for faster and more reliable 5G.

The switch-off may be problematic for customers using older mobile devices as these – or at least the sim card – may need replacing. Vodafone has confirmed its 2G network will remain in place for calls and texts.

According to its website customers on older devices "should think about upgrading" if they are on pay monthly contracts. Those on Pay As You Go can "browse [our] range of compatible devices to find one that's right for you".
