Busy road cordoned off after man hit by car

Police have closed a busy high street after a man was hit by a car.

Merseyside Police were called to Lord Street in Southport at 6.14pm on Tuesday, January 2, following reports of a crash. Once officers arrived at the scene they found a man on a bike was hit by a Volkswagen Beetle on the busy road.

A cordon was put in place on Lord Street, outside The Prince of Wales Hotel, as emergency services attended the scene. The man was taken to hospital with injuries described by police as serious but not life threatening.

The driver of the VW stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries. Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO no arrests had been made at this time.

Lord Street reopened at around 8.20pm. Arriva North West posted on the social media platform, X, to warn customers all buses that would usually stop on Lord Street would be diverted.

The update read: "Due to an RTC on Lord St, Southport, all services will operate via East Bank St, King St, Portland St and Duke St, omitting Lord St until 21:00."
