A 16-year-old boy heard a "strange noise" from downstairs, which ended up saving his mum's life.

Bradley Tierney, 16, from Litherland was at home with his mum, Carmen, 52, on Tuesday, November 21, when he started hearing a "strange noise" from downstairs. After going to investigate, he found that the noise was his mum trying to shout him for help.

He immediately put his mum in the recovery position, put a pillow under her head and called for an ambulance. She was taken to Aintree Hospital, where doctors told her she had suffered a major stroke.

Bradley's older brother Jamie, 25, told The ECHO: "My mum works from home and my brother was upstairs when he heard this strange noise and couldn't put his finger on what he could hear. It was my mum trying to shout for help.

"She was down for about two or three minutes when my brother got to her. He was just rapid and instincts kicked in and he knew what to do.

"They said she had a serious stroke and the staff said if it was any longer, my mum could have lost her life."

Bradley said his brother knew what to do after noticing the symptoms of a stroke from the NHS "act fast" adverts that are aired on UK TV. His mum is now at home and recovering after being on the Aintree Acute Stroke Ward for almost two weeks.

The 25-year-old continued: "I'm so proud of my brother and so grateful for what he did that night. He was brilliant.

"I want to thank all the staff on the acute stroke unit at Aintree Hospital for helping my mum start her recovery. I also just want to ask people to look up the signs and symptoms of strokes as it could potentially save somebody's life."
