Millions of us drink at least one cup of coffee each day.

Many of us are almost reliant on our caffeine fixes, with a coffee helping us start the day or providing a much-needed boost when we hit a slump. But that cup of coffee could have disastrous consequences when it comes to taking better care of ourselves.

Despite being packed with potent antioxidants, coffee intake can have negative effects and one of these impacts the vitamins and supplements people take to improve their health.

Health and wellbeing experts at Simply Supplements spoke to the ECHO about how coffee, and other foods and lifestyle choices, could be interfering with these supplements and stopping them from working.

Tannins in coffee and other caffeine-filled drinks like tea can stop your body getting what it needs from the supplements, as they hinder the absorption of essential minerals. And if your supplements also contain caffeine, or caffeine-like compounds, adding more to your system could lead to a stimulant overload.

Alcohol can also affect the absorption and metabolism of supplements, as well as the body's ability to store and excrete them, while high oxalate foods like leafy greens, nuts and beans can "bind to calcium and iron and prevent the nutrients from being absorbed".
