WhatsApp launches ‘secret codes’ for ‘sensitive conversations’

WhatsApp is rolling out a new "secret code" feature among its two billion app users.

WhatsApp is the most used messaging platform in the world, with the app regularly updated by owners Meta. A new roll-out will help users protect more "sensitive conversations" as secret codes will be launched as an "additional way to protect those chats and make them harder to find if someone has access to your phone or you share a phone with someone else."

Users will be able to set a unique password – different from the one you use to unlock your phone – to give an extra layer of privacy. WhatsApp bosses also said the new feature will also include the option to hide the "Locked Chats" so they'll only be visible when you put the secret code into the search bar.

If you want to lock a chat you simply need to long press it.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said: "We’re so happy our community has been loving Chat Lock, and hope that secret code makes it even more useful to them. Secret code starts rolling out today, and in the coming months will be available globally.

"We’re excited to keep bringing more functions to Chat Lock to help people protect their privacy, let us know what you think."
