Les Dennis revealed the moment he realised the drastic age gap between himself and his ex-wife Amanda Holden.

The British television icon is about to jump head-first into the new series of Strictly Come Dancing. Many know Les for his role as Michael Rogers in Coronation Street, as a presenter on Family Fortunes, or his brief stint on Celebrity Big Brother – but others attribute him to his whirlwind marriage to Amanda Holden.

In 1995, the pair tied the knot when Les was 42 and Amanda 24. They split in 2000 after Amanda's affair with Neil Morrissey was exposed.

Although they briefly reunited again, they separated in 2002 before divorcing one year later. The 17-year age gap didn't mean much to the couple at the time but Les has gone on record to admit there was an awaked exchange that shone a light on the difference.

Speaking on Richard Herring's podcast – Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre podcasts – Les said: "I'm in our house in Highgate and it was Grand National Day and the plumber was there to fix the washing machine and Amanda came running in and said 'we need to put a bet on'.

"I said 'What?' and she said 'It's the Grand National.' I said ok great and handed her £10 and she said 'Oh we need to put more than that on' and I went ok here's £20. And the plumber went 'Kid's Eh?'."
