Asda’s £1 engagement ring flying off shelves – here’s what I thought

Considering I've recently just got engaged myself, I was very intrigued to see what an engagement ring for £1 from Asda would look like.

I tried to get my hands on the Poundland version last year, but it sold out so fast that I didn't even get a look in. Which is why as soon as I saw that Asda were selling its own version, I knew I had to get to my local store ASAP.

With Valentine's Day two weeks from today, many shoppers are no doubt already purchasing an array of extravagant gifts for that special person in their lives. This really does beg the question – would a £1 engagement ring make the cut?

From what I've gathered, shoppers aren't really sure what to make of the ring, and I can't blame them to be honest. A £1 engagement ring was either going to completely disappoint me or surprise me, so I knew I had to try it.

I power walked to my local Asda to its Valentine's section and was actually shocked at how few rings were left. The whole shelf was virtually empty, with about three left.

Whether shoppers are actually purchasing this ring with genuine intention or to be completely ironic was something I'd probably never know. But one thing I did know is that the £1 actually looked pretty cute.

What the Asda £1 engagement ring looks like

The packaging for the ring was fairly basic, like most ring boxes usually are, but it had quite a nice velvety feel to it. After getting home and taking the ring out of its packaging, I was shocked.

Now, I'm not saying that this ring had a massive rock on it that shimmered like crazy, but it certainly looked nicer than I thought it would. For £1, I wasn't expecting much, but aesthetically the ring did exceed my expectations.

It looked worth much more than £1

It had a small circular stone embedded delicately onto a plain silver band, and in certain lights, it had a lovely shimmer to it. Funnily enough, the ring fit me perfectly, which definitely made my fiancé chuckle a tad.

How it compared to a traditional engagement ring

Although this ring is, of course, completely plastic, it actually felt pretty good in terms of quality. It had a certain weight to it that I wasn't expecting at all.

All in all, I don't think that this engagement ring, aesthetically, looks like it costs £1. To me, it looked more expensive, and if it was going to take away the pressure of purchasing a ring for a hefty fee – then why the hell not wouldn't you buy it?

On the Asda website, the product description reads: "Have some fun with this engagement ring in a velvet box this Valentine's Day." To me, that doesn't sound like it's a completely serious product – but to some, it may well be.

My verdict

In all honesty, this £1 engagement ring wound up being a lot better than I thought. Whether it's a serious ring or a bit of a jokey gift, the quality is pretty decent nonetheless.

I didn't end up wearing this ring for long, so I can't confirm whether it would've given me a green finger or not! Regardless of that, for £1, Asda has done a pretty decent job at replicating a special ring like this.

Whether you want to purchase this ring purely for a laugh or with serious intentions, Asda have definitely surprised me. You can purchase the Asda £1 engagement ring here and find your nearest Asda store here.
