43 nicknames Scousers give for places and buildings in Merseyside

BySpotted UK

Oct 14, 2023

In Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area, a number of place names, buildings and more are known to locals by something other than their "official names."

The ECHO recently shared a list of nicknames that Scousers will always choose over 'official' place names, from Bombed Out Church to the bubble bus stops. But there are so many more that could have been included.

The renaming of local landmarks comes about for a variety of reasons, whether it's a nod to the location's history or part of the dialect we've come to use so frequently. Sometimes a name just catches on even if it doesn’t really make any sense, the ECHO previously reported.

Some places have now been confined to history or replaced by something else entirely. Here, we take another look back at place names and buildings across the region and the "nickname" they're known by.

This list isn't intended to be comprehensive, we've included a number of generic names and places from across Liverpool and wider Merseyside, as suggested by ECHO readers on social media. But if you have any suggestions past and present to include, let us know in the comments section below.
